Dmitry Gubin came to the US with his family in 1989. Throughout his
childhood, he received extensive art education from his father, an award- winning painter and sculptor. He studied painting at LaGuardia HS of Music and Arts in NYC. Upon graduation, he attended the School of Visual Arts with a major in photography and later received a Master's degree from Pratt Institute. Gubin was inspired to pursue filmmaking after watching Ingmar Bergman's Seventh Seal and Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker at the age of 16.But he did not begin making films until he found himself in a classroom, teaching filmmaking at an elite arts high school in Queens. Since then, he worked as a cinematographer and editor on a number of short films and music videos. Gubin started directing in 2021, making his debut semi-autobiographical film, Yesterday and Today. His style is inspired by the art traditions of Eastern Europe and the works of such filmmakers such as Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch, Wong Kar-Wai, and Daren Aronofsky. |
